Today, we are going to talk about the case of Rajesh Das. Rajesh Das, a special director general of police (DGP) who had previously been suspended, was found guilty and sentenced to three years in prison on Friday. Das was given a concurrent prison term for two different offenses by the Villupuram Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM). First, Das will be sentenced to three years in prison for violating Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 354 A(ii), which prohibits assaulting or using criminal force against any lady with the purpose to offend her modesty. Das was sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of Rs 10,000 under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. He received a further Rs 500 punishment for improper restraint in accordance with the IPC.

However, the judge gave Das bail and a 30-day window to file an appeal. The Villupuram court released the former Chengalpattu SP D. Kannan with a punishment of Rs 500 after he had been charged by the CB-CID for attempting to prevent the female IPS officer from filing a case against Das. Rajesh Das allegedly harassed her while she was working at CM Palaniswami’s election event in 2021, according to the allegation. Another police officer who ‘tried to stop her’ from submitting a complaint was fined Rs 500.

The female IPS officer accused Das of sexually assaulting her in his car when they were on security duty for the election campaign of the then-chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, in a complaint she made on March 1st, 2021. She said that at Palaniswami’s meeting on February 21, the special DGP instructed her to ride along in his car. According to the FIR, the senior officer reportedly held her hand and sang “for about 20 minutes” before kissing her hand. “She withdrew her hand and informed him that she was uncomfortable and that the gesture was improper. It reads, “He replied (give him) only five minutes and grasped her hand again. As a result of the strain and worry at this time, perspiration had begun to accumulate on my palms. When he saw this, he offered her his towel to wipe off the sweat. The senior officer reportedly showed her a photo of her that he had earlier taken while paying her workplace a visit. According to the FIR, the IPS officer said to her that he had stored the image as one of his “favorites” so that he could quickly retrieve it.

She further claimed that Das went to considerable measures to stop her from reporting the crime, pleading with her constantly and even utilizing official channels for intimidation. The female officer said in the FIR that the special DG asked for forgiveness when he learned she was going to complain to the “head of the police in Chennai” the next day. She said that Das allegedly phoned her father-in-law to try to negotiate a “compromise and conciliation” and that he promised to “fall at her feet and apologize for his actions.” The IPS officer was immediately placed on mandatory wait after the complaint was submitted, and the state government eventually suspended him.
