Judge in Trump’s New York civil fraud trial

The Manhattan judge presiding over Donald Trump’s $250 million civil fraud trial lost his cool on Wednesday when the former president’s attorneys questioned his ex-accountant about conflicting testimony, slamming his hand on the bench and yelling, “This is ridiculous.” After Trump’s team alleged that Donald Bender, a partner at the accounting company Mazars USA, was dodging their questions, the judge responded in an irritated manner. Additionally, the attorneys had emphasised time and time again that Bender and they needed to review Trump’s financial documents “year by year carefully.”

Justice Arthur Engoron of the Manhattan Supreme Court said firmly, “Don’t waste time.” Cross-examining Bender for most of Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, Trump attorney Jesus Suarez promised to keep going until the end of the day.  “This is ridiculous!” you say. Engoron muttered as he struck the bench with his hand. “This is not a trial for Mr. Bender.” Christopher Kise, a different Trump lawyer, claimed that Bender “seems to recall only what the government wants him to recall.” Kise said, “We need to be able to sort through the evidence since we didn’t bring this case.” He has no memory as we sit here, according to Trump attorney Alina Habba, who added, “We haven’t gotten one answer from him.” Before repeating, “Let’s not waste time,” the judge asked Kise whether they could “streamline” the cross-examination.

Engoron grilled Trump’s legal team twice more during testimony on Wednesday, the third day of the trial in the case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, saying at one point that they were courting the media and conducting their defense as if a jury were in attendance. He apparently prompted an irritated response from Trump, 77, who threw his arms in the air while seated at the defense table with his counsel. “There is no jury here,” he reportedly yelled.
