A man who allegedly attempted to steal cars in West Auckland while being held at gunpoint was shot by armed police. The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon smack in the middle of rush hour, leading to the closing of the Lincoln Road off-ramp and the highway overbridge. It is believed that the man’s injuries are not life-threatening. Around 3:19 p.m., police in Te Atatu Peninsula observed a suspicious car and flagged it down to a halt. They drove after the car as it headed for the Lincoln Rd off-ramp, where the man is suspected of attempting to steal two further automobiles. According to Superintendent Shanan Grey, one of the cars ran over the individual.

Armed police approached the man, but instead of engaging them, he ran into the truck’s passenger side, forcing the driver to exit from the opposite side, according to Grey. At this point in the affair, the perpetrator has been shot by police, leading to his surrender. After receiving first assistance, the man was later taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening, according to Grey. At least four bullet holes can be seen on the front passenger side of the truck in pictures, which is where the man is thought to have been.

Sam Leigh, a nearby witness, reported hearing gunshots after seeing armed police at the motorway entrance. The police eagle helicopter was also circling the area, she saw. “This was an alarming incident and one that unfolded quickly for motorists going about their afternoon commute,” Grey said. In order to conduct a scene inspection, Auckland’s SH16 off-ramp to Lincoln Rd has been closed. As a result, today evening’s traffic is likely to be backed up. Bridie, a different eyewitness, reported seeing a red beat-up automobile traveling northwest off the Lincoln Rd off-ramp with a bumper dragging beneath and smoke coming from it. She claimed that the motorist drove off to the right and into the barrier while diving down while driving.
