Evangelical Christian feminists created the Evangelical and Ecumenical Women’s Caucus (EEWC), commonly known as Christian Feminism Today (CFT), in 1974. Because it was founded as a caucus inside Evangelicals for Social Action, which had published the “Chicago Declaration,” it was first known as the Evangelical Women’s Caucus (EWC). To “support, educate, and celebrate Christian feminists from many traditions,” is what it aims to do. It called for the use of gender-inclusive language in all communications, supported the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, and encouraged the ordination of women. In order to “reflect the increasingly inclusive nature and the many traditions of [the organization’s] membership,” the word ecumenical was added to the organization’s name in 1990.

On its website, the EEWC explains the significance of its name. Initially, the organization was mostly created by women who identified as “evangelical” and who were brought up in traditional, conservative Christian traditions. In 1974, these women founded the Evangelical Women’s Caucus in response to their growing dissatisfaction with the patriarchal structures, masculine emphasis, and exclusion of women practiced by these churches. In order to incorporate members of mainline Protestant and Catholic denominations, the group later added the word “ecumenical” to their name.

The term “evangelical” is used by the EEWC in the sense of “telling God’s good news.”  The group is aware of the term’s political overtones, too, and changed the name of its quarterly journal to Christian Feminism Today to better reflect its mission and range of political viewpoints.
