Why Is Israel Fixated On Al Shifa Hospital?

For more than a month, the conflict between Israel, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, and the Hamas rebels from Gaza, Palestine, has gotten worse. Following the raid on October 7, the Israeli Defence Forces attacked 4,300 targets to destroy the Islamic fighters. According to Reuters, Israeli soldiers advanced on the major hospital in Gaza City on Monday. This was their main objective in their fight to take over the northern portion of the Gaza Strip, where medical professionals said that patients, including newborns, were dying from a shortage of fuel. In response to the Hamas attack, Israel unleashed continuous bombing on the densely populated Gaza Strip, citing “self-defense” and the need to neutralize any potential “threat” from Hamas fighters.

Over 11,100 civilians have died during the bombardment, which has been ongoing for at least 39 days. Several more have been maimed and displaced, and many more are still missing. The largest hospital in Gaza, Al-Shifa, has come under attack by Netanyahu’s Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), who claim that Hamas has built bunkers underground and is using the institution as a base of operations. Leaders from around the world have denounced the bombardment of Gaza’s hospitals and put pressure on Netanyahu to stop targeting civilians.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told CBS News in an interview that “the United States does not want to see firefights in hospitals where innocent individuals, such as patients receiving medical care, are caught in the crossfire and we’ve had active consultations with the Israeli Defence Forces on this.” For the Netanyahu government, there is still a political and diplomatic risk associated with the bombing of Al-Shifa. According to Prof. Kobi Michael of the Institute of National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, “We have to dismantle the elements of Hamas that will prevent Hamas from becoming a military threat or a government again in this war.”
