S Jaishankar On Resumption Of e-Visas Services For Canadians

India has started issuing e-visas to citizens of Canada again after a diplomatic spat over Ottawa’s allegation that the Indian government may have been involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. As things started to get better, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar described it as a “logical consequence.” Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday after the Virtual G20 Leaders’ Summit ended, Jaishankar stated, “First of all, the E visa had nothing to do with the G20 meeting.” “We temporarily halted the issuance of visas due to the challenging circumstances facing our diplomats in Canada, which made it impossible for them to visit the office and complete the required paperwork for visa processing,” he said.

According to BLS International, an Indian outsourcing service provider that manages government and diplomatic missions worldwide, the Indian Mission in Canada temporarily stopped providing visa services in September for operational reasons. This decision was made till further notice. Important announcement from the Indian Mission: Indian visa services have been discontinued till further notice due to operational issues, starting on September 21, 2023. The BLS website stated, “Please continue to check the website for updates.” After evaluating the security situation and considering Canada’s previous actions, India decided in October to resume providing visa services to four distinct groups for travel to Canada. The categories include conference, business, medical, and entrance visas. As of October 26, services were once again offered.

Canada hailed India’s decision to partially restart visa services after learning of the development, describing it as a “positive indication” and asserting that the suspension “shouldn’t have occurred in the first place.” Notably, India halted its visa services in September, alleging an indefinite pause, during a diplomatic spat with Canada. This action came after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that “agents of the Indian government” were responsible for the June murder of terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a member of the Khalistani movement.
