The London Police arrested the supporter of Man United when he was taking the picture in a t-shirt with the number 97 on the back and allegedly referencing the Hillsborough disaster. It is believed that the Man United supporter was allegedly mocking reference to the 97 Liverpool fans who lost their lives after the Hillsborough disaster. The Liverpool fans passed away as a result of a crash on April 15, 1989, during the semi-final game of the FA Cup in Sheffield with Nottingham Forest. A picture of the Man United supporter wearing a t-shirt with 97 on the back and not enough words on the t-shirt, has begun circulating on the internet. The Metropolitan Police Events revealed the news of a Man United fan’s arrest on suspicion of a public order offense at Wembley during the final game of the FA Cup, through a Twitter post. The post came up on Sunday when FA stated, “The FA strongly condemns the actions of the individual who wore a shirt referencing the Hillsborough disaster ahead of the Emirates FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. We saw a photograph of the offensive shirt on social media and immediately started working to identify the perpetrator. On Saturday, June 3, 2023, the HSA stated the first-ever all-Manchester Cup final took place between Manchester City and Manchester United at Wembley. It was the rare opportunity for the city to show itself in its best light but there was a so-called Manchester United fan who was wearing an away shirt to mock the victims of the Hillsborough tragedy and their families. HSA added, “On the back of the shirt was the number 97, and above that, where players’ names are normally displayed, were the words Not Enough.”
To this despicable act, HSA was alerted on Twitter and Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance thanked the FA, security staff at Wembley, and Metropolitan Police for their swift action to arrest the so-called Manchester United fan in an away shirt with such an offensive message targeting family members and survivors of the Hillsborough tragedy that happened back in 1989.
