DJ Maphorisa, an Amapiano music producer, has been detained on suspicion of assaulting Thuli Phongolo, his girlfriend. According to City Press, which cited a statement Phongolo made when reporting the event to the authorities, this is the case. The Sandton Police Station is where Phongolo gave her statement. Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, DJ Maphorisa’s true name, is said to have assaulted the former Generations: The Legacy actress inside her Sandton flat. Phongolo, a club DJ who also works, claims that the altercation began when she confronted her boyfriend about their contentious disagreement from the previous evening.
“I was at my home on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at about 12 p.m. with my lover, DJ Maphorisa, Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe. I confronted him to discuss our fight that occurred the night before during his performance, Phongolo added in the statement. Phongolo alleges that the DJ struck her in the face after becoming hostile. She claimed, “He aggressively grabbed me by my neck and carried me to the balcony. Thuli Phongolo asserts that her partner snatched her phone during their argument and afterward returned it. When she arrived at the police station, she launched a charge of domestic abuse against him after calling her manager, who drove her there.
On a charge of assault, DJ Maphorisa is scheduled to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court. It’s unclear what caused the original argument, but according to sources quoted by City Press, the pair has recently been at odds. “They got into a confrontation in early December over fidelity claims.
