Delhi Prisons Get Devices To Detect Hidden Mobiles

Ten non-linear junction detectors have been purchased by Delhi Prisons in order to search jails for metal and hidden cell phones. The equipment can find things embedded up to two feet into concrete or the ground. The equipment cost 1.5 crore to purchase from a US-based company. After a mobster was killed inside Tihar jail, the prison administration decided to remove hazardous items from the wards. According to Delhi Prisons officials, 10 non-linear junction detectors have been purchased to find metal objects and mobile phones that inmates have stashed inside of jails. They added that a US-based company provided the machines.

Sanjay Baniwal, the director general of Delhi Prisons, verified the development and announced the purchase of 10 cell phones and metal object detectors. “To improve the efficiency of our correctional staff’s work, we are providing them with cutting-edge technology. They could recover the phones that inmates had hidden within the jails with the use of the detectors. The tool will be useful in identifying metal objects, according to Baniwal. According to a senior jail official, these detectors may even find objects that have been buried up to two feet beneath the surface of the ground or concrete.

“In 2021, we placed an order for two non-linear junction detectors, which we tested out. The conclusion was pleasing, therefore the department made the decision to order more devices from a US-based company. According to the officer, the equipment can detect metals, SIM cards, and mobile phones through concrete that may be buried up to two feet. The department has spent 1.5 crore on 10 devices, each of which costs 15 lakh. The combined capacity of the three jails in Delhi Tihar, Mandoli, and Rohini is 10,026 inmates. However, according to officials, there are currently 2,165 offenders and 17,906 undertrial prisoners (UTP) incarcerated in these three facilities.
