Why Did Caroline Flack Commit Suicide?

After a protracted battle with “fluctuating mental health” that was made worse by the pressure of celebrity, Caroline Flack committed herself after learning she would be charged with abusing her boyfriend, according to a coroner. Coroner Mary Hassell stated after a two-day hearing, during which the Metropolitan police came under fire for their decision to charge the TV presenter with assault after the Crown Prosecution Service initially wanted to charge her with caution, “I find the reason for her taking her life as she now knew she was being prosecuted for certainty, and she knew she would face the public, the press, exposure – it would all come down upon her.”

Hassell stated: “Caroline had a fluctuating mental illness, she had struggled in the past,” before Poplar Coroner Court in London. Even though she may have led a life that seemed idyllic to some, she really faced greater challenges as she rose to fame. She had to deal with the media in a way that most of us don’t. Chris Flack, Flack’s mother, said to Hassell, “I think you got it exactly right. We are aware that there are some things you are not permitted to say, but it is up to us to decide whether or not to pursue it further. You’re on the mark.

After the inquest, Jody Flack and her mother thanked the coroner for the wisdom and compassion she brought to the proceedings in a joint statement. “She treated Caroline with dignity and respect and gave us the opportunity to ask questions and, at last, receive answers to things that have been keeping us up at night ever since Caroline felt she had no choice but to take her own life rather than endure the humiliation of a show trial,” we said. Chris Flack stated that while she “fully appreciates” the need to always treat domestic abuse seriously, the alleged attack involving her and her partner, Lewis Burton, was far from it.
