Hywel Teifi Edwards, his father, was a research professor of Welsh-language literature at University College, Swansea, and Welsh language activist, and a plaid Cymru. He was also an academic and an author. Ewdwards’ mother, Aerona Protheroe, spent 30 years teaching at Ysgol Gyfun y Strade in Llanelli. His only sister is Meinir.
