Maldives Election 2023 Result
Everyone was shocked when the opposition candidate Mohamed Muizzu surprisingly took the lead over Ibrahim Mohamed Solih by 7 percent. After the all ballots opened and counted, the results showed that the opposition leader Mohamed Muizzu got a total of 46 percent of the vote while the incumbent president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih got a total of 39 percent of the vote.

As mentioned, none of the candidates could manage to register the threshold required vote percent to be declared an outright winner, the elections have been forwarded to the second round. The mayor of the capital city Male, Mohamed Muizzu contested the election promising to limit India’s presence in the country by expelling a small unit of Indian military deployed in the archipelago. The last presidential election was won by Ibrahim Solih in 2018 amid widespread outrage over corruption under PPM. Solih brought back the Maldives firmly into India’s region.
