Who Is Suella Braverman? Meet Home Secretary of the United Kingdom
Suella Braverman is an Indian (her parents belonged to India) who is now going to be a British politician and barrister who has served as Home Secretary since October 25, 2022. She previously held the position from 6 September to 19 October 2022 under Prime Minister. She chaired the European Research Group which is a conservative party from 2017 to 2018. She has been a Member of Parliament for Fareham since 2015.
Who Is Suella Braverman?
Braverman was born in Harrow, Greater London, and raised in Wembley City. She is the daughter of Uma and Christie Fernandes, both of Indian origin, who emigrated to Britain in the 1960s from Mauritius and Kenya respectively. Her mother is of Hindu Tamil Mauritian descent and was a nurse and a councilor in Brent and as well as a candidate for the general election in 2001 and 2003. Whereas, her father, Goan Christian worked for a housing association. She is also the niece of Mahen Kundasamy, a former Mauritian High Commissioner to London.
She lived in France for two years, as an Erasmus Programme student and then as an Entente Cordiale Scholar, where she studied for a master’s degree in European and French law at Pantheon-Sorbonne University. She married Rael Braverman, a manager of the Mercedes-Benz Group in February 2018 at the House of Commons. Speaking at a meeting of the Asian-Jewish Business Network in 2021, Braverman described her husband as a very proud member of the Jewish community and stated his family are contributors. They have 2 children, born in 2019 and 2021.
On February 19, 2020, she was honored by the ‘Right Honourable’ as a member of Her Majesty’s Most Honorable Privy Council. Later, on February 24, 2020, she was appointed as Queen Counsel. As per her career is concerned, she was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 2005. She completed pupillage at 2-3 Gray’s Inn Square but did not start tenancy there. She also worked in litigation including the judicial review basics for a government practitioner of immigration and planning law. She passed the New York Bar exam in 2006 and was thereafter licensed to practice law in the state. The license got suspended in 2021 after she did not re-register as an attorney. She was appointed to the Attorney General’s panel of counsel.
Braverman has described herself as a child of the British Empire. Her parents, who were from Mauritius and Keny, came to the UK with admiration and gratitude for what Britain did for Mauritius and Kenya, and India. Altogether, she believed that British Empire was lowkey good and she is proud of the British Empire.
