Recently, it was reported that the 2026 Commonwealth Games are in doubt after the Australian state of Victoria canceled its plans to host due to budget blowouts. Before Victoria volunteered in April 2022, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) struggled a find a host before. However, the premier said that the projected cost had now tripled and become well and truly too much for the state to bear. Moreover, the CGF called the decision hugely disappointing and said it is completely committed to finding a solution. The Commonwealth Games are a multi-sport tournament that takes place every four years. The only cancellation happened during World War Two.

Furthermore, it was known that to get the desired eligibility for participation, the competitors must be from one of the Commonwealth’s 56 members. Moreover, most of the countries in the Commonwealth were once part of the British Empire. On Tuesday, the Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews said that his state had been extremely glad to help out when approached to host last year. Downing Street said that the cancellation was disappointing for fans and other athletes. Moreover, the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak’s spokesman said that the UK government hoped a reliable solution to the problem could be found by the Australian authorities and the CGF.

Suggested by the King’s coronation which showed the strength of the Commonwealth and the commitment of countries to it, he rejected a claim that the move was a sign of the decline of the Commonwealth as a whole. However, the organizers had originally estimated the event which was hosted across the cities such as Geelong, Bendigo, and Ballarat that would cost $2.6 bn and the state government had billed it as a boost for the regions. Furthermore, the government will still complete the stadium upgrades it had promised ahead of the games, while the saved money will be used on housing and tourism initiatives. Meanwhile, the athletes have expressed frustration at the cancellation of the games, which many view as a valuable training ground ahead of the Olympics.
