The Texas Air Force member was identified as Aaron Bushnell, a 25-year-old software engineer at the San Antonio, Texas, US Air Force. The airman sent himself on fire after recording a video on Facebook on Sunday, February 25, 2024. He was outside the Israeli embassy in Washington DC where he set himself on fire in a protest against the Israeli Army’s operation in Gaza. However, the security personnel outside the Israeli embassy used the fire extinguishers to blow out the fire. As a result, a 25-year-old Texas Air Force airman sustained fatal injuries.

Aaron Bushnell’s final message reads “My name is Aaron Bushnell. I am an active-duty member of the United States Air Force & I will no longer be complicit in genocide. I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest, but compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal. Free Palestine!”
