According to the latest reports, the Universal Basic Income of £1,600 per month in England is to be tried out in a pilot program for the first time. Reportedly, a total of 30 people will be given this sum without conditions each month for 2 years and they will be observed to learn the effects on their lives. Furthermore, it was also reported that two places in England, East Finchley in North London and Central Jarrow in North-East England, have been selected for the micro-pilot scheme. The director of research at Autonomy’s thinktank, Will Stronge said £1,600 is a substantial amount. He further added that UBI (Universal Basic Income) covers people’s basic needs only but Autonomy wants to see how it will affect people’s mental and physical health whether they decided to work or not. Will Stronge further added, “Our society is going to require some form of basic income in the coming years, given the tumult of climate change, tech disruption, and industrial transition that lies ahead. This is why building the evidence base and public engagement now is so important, so the ground is well prepared for national implementation”
