On Sunday, October 29, the leaders of the United Auto Workers union accepted a new tentative contract agreement with Ford Motor. The agreement involves a significant $8.1 billion investment in the company’s manufacturing. There has been no definitive deal at General Motors, despite continued negotiations. Before taking into account increased profit sharing and retirement payments, workers under the UAW-Ford pact may get up to $70,000 in additional compensation over the course of the 4-1/2-year contract. By 2028, the highest hourly income for employees is expected to reach $42.60, which will cover projected cost of living adjustments. Furthermore, the contract removes all lower-wage plants and offers workers buyouts of $50,000.
A $5,000 ratification bonus, unique retirement incentives, and a quicker route to the top union pay rate for recently hired temporary employees are also included in the deal. Employees will also benefit from enhanced employer contributions to retirement benefits and a $1,500 voucher toward the purchase of a vehicle. Within three years, current Ford temporary workers will become permanent employees and advance to top pay. The agreement also makes it possible for employees of Ford’s BlueOval City electric car complex in Tennessee, joint ventures, and battery plants to enlist in the union and get benefits under the master contract.
Ford intends to integrate electric cars (EVs) into its current assembly plants in Louisville, Ohio, as part of the investment. New hybrid vehicle types are being produced, such as gas-electric hybrid variants of the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. Jim Farley, the CEO of Ford, has highlighted the company’s dedication to growing its selection of hybrid vehicles. After talking with local union leaders in Detroit, the UAW openly disclosed to Ford the contents of its new deal. All members of the union may now ratify the deal. The UAW’s officials now have to explain the Ford contract to their members, who will finally cast their votes to approve it.
