Raniganj Coal Mine was the first coal mine in the country, It was opened in 1774 after Suetonius Grant Heatly and John Sumner of the British East India Company got a license for coal mining in Raniganj. In 1974, this coal mine was nationalized when the Coal Mines Authority of India took over it. The incident happened when 220 coal mine workers were working in the Raniganj coal mine in the night when they suddenly felt trapped after their coal wall blast had cracked the underground water table. The coal miners could only run at that time. The coal mine workers who were near the lift shaft came out quickly but the remaining coal mine workers got trapped inside the mine. Due to one of the coal wall blasts cracking the underground water table, six workers died while 64 lodged themselves into cavities and crevices. Shortly after the coal workers got trapped inside the Raniganj coal mine, the authorities were informed about it. Soon, a rescue mission operation was started to pull out all the remaining people inside the mine. Reportedly, the remaining 64 people were at six different locations inside the mine therefore, six holes had to be drilled with the help of a mine map. The trapped mine workers were communicated from outside the mine through walkie-talkies. Authorities also lowered food and water inside the mine. Later a steel and iron capsule was also lowered to the trapped workers with the help of a pulley. The trapped workers were pulled out one by one through the pulley, like pulling out water from a well.

This mission would not have been successful if there had not been that one man who showed his courage to go into the mine voluntarily to open the door of the capsule and assist the nearest mine workers to get into the steel and iron capsule. The man also signaled the people outside the mine to pull the capsule. The man who was the biggest reason for the success of the Raniganj coal mine rescue mission was Engineer Jaswant Singh Gill. Engineer Jaswant Singh Gill remained inside the coal mine until the last mine worker was not pulled out. Notably, Jaswant Singh Gill went inside the Raniganj mine despite the company not wanting to send him inside as the company did not want to lose the life of its high-ranking officer. But Jaswant Singh Gill did not listen to the state-owned company and voluntarily lowered to the mine.

Later, Jaswant Singh Gill was conferred with Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak and Bhagat Puran Award for service to humanity. Akshay Kumar is playing the role of Jaswant Singh Gill in the film.
