The retail chain Checkers has declared itself to be the official partner of the popular PRIME energy drink that has gained massive popularity in South Africa on social media. PRIME will be available starting on May 1st, 2023, in specific Checkers and Checkers Hyper locations as well as on Sixty60 in the Western Cape, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal. The group stated that it will be implemented throughout the whole of South Africa this month. The PRIME brand consists of a selection of sports drinks, drink mixes, and energy beverages that Prime Hydration developed, marketed, and supported by YouTubers Logan Paul and KSI.
This past month, as many young people scoured the country for any and all bottles they could find, the beverage experienced a rise in popularity. Prices were driven up to R400 or R500 due to severe supply constraints, creating even more commotion. The price has caused parents to recoil, and many commentators have dubbed the beverage exorbitant and overhyped, but this hasn’t done anything to reduce demand. The drink is now only offered at retail costs one-tenth of what people have been paying, according to Checkers, which claims that it has been confirmed as the drink’s official South African retail partner. The beverage will cost R39.99 at retail.
“PRIME has become an international viral sensation following its hugely successful launch in January 2022 by YouTube sensations Logan Paul and KSI, who, combined, boast around 100 million social media followers,” it claimed. The availability of PRIME, which was first introduced in the USA, UK, and Australia in 2022, sparked significant interest among Gen Z consumers, leading to thousands of people overnight queuing up to obtain the well-liked beverage that has since become a viral collector’s item throughout the world. Checkers announced that four PRIME Hydration flavors—Ice Pop, Blue Raspberry, Lemon Lime, and Tropical Punch—will be available at launch. There will be an eight-purchase cap per client and two purchases for each variety.
