A&W restaurant in Parkdale was the scene of a blatant gunpoint robbery on Thursday night, according to a newly released CCTV video. A man wearing a facial covering is seen at the counter in the footage, which was recorded on Thursday night at about 7 o’clock, placing an order for meals. When paying with cash, he pulls out what seems to be a gun from a hoodie pocket and points it at the cashier while he tries to take cash out of the register. The cashier runs back into the kitchen while defending himself with a trash can. The guy then leaps over the counter and orders the staff to “go” as the customers run out of the business.

After taking the cash, the suspect leaves the restaurant on foot. Franchise owner Achintya Roy claimed in an interview with CP24 that despite the restaurant calling for assistance, police did not arrive at the scene until many hours had passed. According to Roy, the neighborhood near the restaurant at Queen Street West and Macdonnell Avenue has been riskier over the past several months due to an increase in the number of clearly homeless people and a rise in the frequency of public intoxication. Roy claims that the front door and windows of the business have been broken “several times” recently.

We have a very difficult time conducting business, he remarked. “Working here makes us nervous. We’re here all the time, yet we’re afraid to be here. Even the night shift is plagued by several issues, and the cops are never called. I’m not sure how we’ll manage to continue on. Since the incident on Thursday, the restaurant has reopened, according to Roy. The Toronto Police Service stated there is an “ongoing investigation” into the incident in an email to CP24. Police disputed the assertion made by the proprietor of the eatery that they took too long to react. Police stated in a subsequent email that they were called at 7:22 p.m. and arrived at the location at 7:26 p.m.
