On 22 August 2022, Olivia Pratt-Korbel, a nine-year-old girl, was shot by a masked gunman in Liverpool, England, and was pronounced dead the same day at the city’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. The attack took place at the doorstep of the family. Around 10om on 22 August 2022, Pratt-Korbel’s mother heard a disturbance outside her family home in Dovecot City. She opened the door and Olivia was standing behind her. Joseph Nee, a 35-year old was the person to whom the target was about to shoot. He attempted to force himself into her home. While Nee attempted to enter the house, the gunman who was wearing a black jacket approached the house and shot four times. One of the bullets went through Cheryl’s wrist and into Pratt-Korbel’s chest.
Nee, the intended target of the attack, was a convicted drug dealer and burglar. He had been released on license in 2021, halfway through his sentence. Her siblings were in the house upstairs during the attack. Olivia was later declared dead at the Children’s Hospital, Liverpool. Nee, as expected by the police, ran away to get escape in a black Audi car but unfortunately, got arrested for breaking his license conditions and was returned to prison.
During the investigation, on August 30, 2022, two men were released. On September 1, police released CCTV footage of the gunman. On September 4 2022 one man was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, and two others were waiting of assisting an offender. On September 7 the suspects were bailed whereas, the next day another man was arrested. A ninth man was arrested on September 10, 2022.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson described the killing as a tragic incident and further claimed that they will help whenever needed. Their manager Frank Lampard encouraged people to inform the police if they had information about the attack. The entire city of Liverpool held a tribute to Olivia during their match. The two teams presented also paid tribute to her in the ninth minute of the match.
