Montreal Canadiens Pride Jersey Explained

Every country has their own way to represent its culture, festivals and national holidays. This time as well the jersey of the country is in the news and people want to know the meaning depicts in it and why Canadiens are getting keen to purchase and wear it. This jersey has been designed by Graphic artist Amelie Lehoux who has always been a hockey admirer. She is a graphic designer and illustrator who hails from Montreal. She states that as a child, her father Mario would take her to watch the Habs play at the Bell Centre. “It was our father-daughter outing, so I have always had an emotional kind of connection to hockey.”

She is always passionate about drawing and since childhood, she decided to make her career in this field and became a popular graphic designer. Amelie Lehoux spent her childhood redesigning the logos and jerseys of different National Hockey League teams. “I always found the jerseys of hockey beautiful and emblematic. It is incredible, all these years later, that I was entrusted with this project that I dreamed of as a kid.” She was entrusted with illustrating the artwork that will be featured on the jerseys and sweaters that the players of Canada will wear at the time of the warmups for Pride Night this year.

The Pride Night was presented by Scotiabank, on Thursday, 6th April 2023 at the Bell Centre. It will be a chance for the team to express their strength and support for all the members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Amelie is also part of this community. She states that “When I was 1st approached by the team Montreal Canadiens, I instantly said yes to it. It means a lot to me to be able to honour and highlight this community that I identify so passionately and deeply with, one that remains marginalized and is usually not clear enough.”

For this design, Amelia made a variety of lists that she used to design the jersey which recalls her of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community along with the keywords associated with the world of hockey, until common themes so that she used both the things in this jersey. Apart from it, Denis Gurianov the player in Montreal Canadiens was excluded from the pre-game warms that were scheduled on Thursday, 6th April 2023 ahead of the Habs’ annual Pride Nigh game because of his refusal to wear the jersey whose theme was pride. During the press conference, Martin St-Louis the coach of the Montreal Canadiens addressed his absence, stating that the Russian player would not be participating for family reasons.
