Berry, a Wigan native, joined Wigan Athletic on a scholarship in December 2016 after being let go by Liverpool. Berry joined Hull City in November 2019 after the club and Wigan reached an agreement on compensation. He made his senior debut on February 11, 2020, coming on as a substitute in a 3-0 loss to Blackburn Rovers. He signed for Altrincham after being released from Hull and then joined Macclesfield on loan.

In March 2022, he agreed to a two-year contract that would make his transfer to Macclesfield a permanent one, breaking the club’s previous signing record. In his 34 games during the 2021–22 season, he scored 18 goals, including a brace in a 4-0 victory over Ashton Athletic on March 12, 2022, which won the North West Counties Premier Division. Berry signed a three-year contract with National League team Chesterfield on August 10, 2023, for an unknown sum.  James Berry, a new Spireites acquisition, “gets fans off their seats” and “brings experience beyond his years.” Berry, 22, who can play both up front and out wide, has signed a three-year contract to join Northern Premier League team Macclesfield for an unknown sum.

In 35 games last season, he made 26 goals and received various individual honors as the Silkmen won the championship. Coach Danny Webb described him as “very direct and very hungry.” He is over the moon to be here. He simply wants to enter the field. He is right-footed, but I believe he can play on either side of the field. He can play up front or off the front, depending on the situation. Another player who has the ability to get fans up from their seats is him. Another young man with ambition and a desire to do big things for this football team is now available to the fans.
