Portuguese Singer Antonio Variacoes’s Birthday
Antonio Variacoes, a Portuguese musician, hairdresser, and songwriter, is commemorating his 79th birthday with a Google Doodle. Despite never having come out as an LGBT+ person, Variacoes is still regarded as a community hero and is warmly honoured at Pride marches for his iconic music and enduring influence on LGBTQ+ culture. Variacoes was born in Fiscal on December 3, 1944, and grew up on his parents’ farm with many siblings. It was there that he fell in love with music, having watched his father perform on the accordion and cavaquinho.
Due to heavily censored Portuguese media that did not feature people wearing clothing that deviated from traditional norms, Variacoes did not grow up with many diverse style influences. However, when he traveled to London and studied hairdressing in Amsterdam, the legendary singer experimented with various looks and eventually developed his unique sense of style. Variacoes had a distinctive sense of style once he returned to Lisbon; he would often wear vibrant colors and designs, massive metal accessories, and facial hair that was dyed in two tones. Before starting his salon, E Pro Menino e Pra Menina, Variacoes worked at the first unisex hair salon in Portugal.
Variacoes rose to prominence with his self-penned debut album, Anjo da Guarda, and later rocked the pop-rock scene again with the release of his gloomy album, Dar e Receber, in 1984. But before Variacoes could experience becoming a radio smash, he passed away from issues related to HIV/AIDS. Varacoes, one of the first well-known celebrities to suffer HIV/AIDS, contributed to raising awareness and compassion for the disease. Legendary Portuguese singer Variacoes rose to prominence with his self-penned records but passed away before achieving radio stardom. He became a spokesperson for HIV/AIDS and a symbol of the LGBTQ+ community.
