Fair Housing Month 2023
If we have to describe Fair Housing Act in short we would say it was brought into action by signing as law to end housing discrimination and protect housing rights. Let’s talk about it from the start. April’s month is the month of Fair Housing Month that same month President Lyndon Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act aka FHA 55 years ago. Since then, April month is considered a yearly celebration. Prior to signing the Fair Housing Act, it was legal to redline races and tell protected classes where they could live and where they could not live. But in 1968, a revolutionary act was brought into action by President Lyndon Johnson who signed the FHA in April month, as Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 which became a landmark development in legislation. But April month’s signing of the FHA Act also has a link to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., because Lyndon Johnson signed the bill creating the FHA one week after King’s assassination in a tribute to King’s battle for housing equality.
Over the years The Fair Housing Act has expanded. Now it is prohibited to discriminate in housing because of color, race, national origin, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), religion, familial status, and disability. On the occasion of Fair Housing Month, Enterprise Community Partners, a non-profitable organization stated, this April, we recognize National Fair Housing Month. 55 years after the passage of the landmark Fair Housing Act, people are still facing discrimination in the housing marketplace. People are celebrating the 55th Fair Housing Month in 2023. People have the opportunity to help people make one of the biggest and most important investments of their lifetime.
