China’s Mysterious Pneumonia Outbreak
On Wednesday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) urged people in China to follow precautions meant to reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses. Furthermore, the organization asked the authorities for more details regarding a reported rise in incidents involving youngsters. On November 13, 2023, officials from China’s National Health Commission revealed an increase in the nation’s incidence of respiratory illnesses during a news conference. The UN health authority said in a statement posted on X that there has been “an increase in influenza-like illness since mid-October when compared to the same period in the previous three years” in the country’s northern regions.
Clusters of youngsters in northern China who do not have a diagnosis of pneumonia were reported by the public illness surveillance system ProMED and the media on November 21. WHO stated that it is unknown if these are related to the overall rise in respiratory illnesses that Chinese authorities had previously recorded or if they are unrelated incidents. WHO continued, “WHO has formally requested detailed information from China regarding an increase in respiratory illnesses and reported clusters of pneumonia in children.” On November 13, Chinese officials informed reporters that the increase in respiratory illnesses was caused by the removal of COVID-19 limitations and the spread of recognized diseases, such as the flu and common pediatric bacterial infections.
On November 21, clusters of undetected pneumonia in children in northern China were reported by the media and the national illness surveillance system ProMED. The WHO stated that it was unsure if ProMED’s report had anything to do with the news conference held by the authorities and that it was looking for clarification. The WHO stated, “We have also requested further information about the current burden on health care systems, as well as recent trends in the circulation of known pathogens including influenza, SARS-CoV-2, RSV, and mycoplasma pneumonia.”
