Channel 4 Idents 2023
A new set of idents for Channel 4 has been introduced, and starting on Wednesday night, they will be used to introduce the channel’s programming. The ‘4’ is recreated in the broadcaster’s new idents as a traveller who guides viewers through an infinite number of content universes. Each movie revolves around the distinctive Channel 4 logo, which is shown repeatedly as the camera pans around it to display “thought-provoking and dramatic scenes that form a part of Channel 4’s ‘Altogether Different’ reflection of the UK.” The five new idents, which were produced in-house by 4creative, show images including an urban fox hiding out in a dilapidated phone box, a gathering of students on the last day of school, a frozen moment from a Friday night, and a Zoroastrian New Year party.
A tapestry of contemporary British culture is woven from the 25 looping scenes by a diverse mix of 17 independent creatives, artists, and filmmakers. The Channel 4 idents are intended to symbolise the broadcaster’s ideals and public service mandate to take creative risks, inspire change, promote underrepresented voices, and showcase the diversity of the UK. They were shot over four studio days and four days on location in Glasgow and the surrounding area. The idents were created by 4creative in association with Art Practise and Love Song. The initial set of Channel 4 idents from the 1980s included animated colourful blocks that formed the 4 logos and the David Dundas-composed music from ‘Fourscore’.
In the 1990s, this was abandoned in favour of a set of idents with four circles, which were later followed by a set with the number four in a square. When viewed from a certain angle, certain objects in Channel 4’s long-running idents from the 2000s resembled the 4 logos. Before choosing a giant, station 4 first used a variety of abstract idents. The seafront in New Brighton and the ascent to Mam Tor in Derbyshire were among the places where people saw the monster. On June 14 at 18:55, between Hollyoaks and Channel 4 News, the new films will debut on Channel 4. A special one-off film with all five idents looped together will be shown, along with specially commissioned lines by British author John Joseph Holt.
