An Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer was detained by the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Friday. The DVAC said that the officer had been caught “red-handed” taking a ₹20 lakh bribe from a doctor in the Dindigul district. Ankit Tiwari and his team of Enforcement Directorate agents were reportedly bullying people and seeking money under the guise of resolving matters within the Enforcement Directorate, according to an official notification from the authorities. Tamil Nadu DVAC stated in an official statement that “investigation is being done to elucidate that he had blackmailed/threatened any additional officials adopting this modus operandi and collected crores of money in the alias of the Enforcement Directorate.”
Ankit Tiwari, an officer from the 2016 batch, has experience working in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Tiwari is employed by the Union government as an enforcement officer in the Madurai Enforcement Department office, according to an official statement issued by DVAC Chennai. “He mentioned a case registered against him in the Dindigul Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department, which was already disposed of,” the DVAC stated in its release. “On October 29, 2023, he contacted a government employee from Dindigul.”
Additionally, Ankit Tiwari informed the government worker that the Prime Minister’s Office has issued orders for the Enforcement Department to launch a probe into this problem. He gave the government official instructions to show up on October 30, 2023, at the Enforcement Directorate headquarters in Madurai. Then, when the government worker went to Madurai, Ankit Tiwari got into his car and offered to settle the dispute by saying that he could avoid going to court if he paid ₹3 crore. Tiwari then stated that he had discussed this with his superiors and that they had decided to accept a bribe of ₹51 lakh. The government employee paid the first installment of the bribe, totaling ₹20 lakh, on November 1, 2023.
