The 63-year-old leader of the Swami Gnanananda Ashram, Swami Poornananda, was charged with raping a child in 2012. The police claim that this is the second accusation that has been made against him. The 63-year-old leader of an ashram in the city, Swami Poornananda, was detained by the Visakhapatnam police for allegedly raping a young member of his ashram. The arrest comes in response to the 15-year-old victim’s complaint that Poornananda had raped her and imprisoned her against her will in the Swami Gnanananda Ashram at Venkojipalem. The little girl, who was able to escape the ashram, spoke to the media about her horrific ordeals and claimed that Poornananda had tied her up and beaten her in a room.

The young girl, whose parents passed away a few years ago, claimed that her aunt accepted her to the ashram after she finished Class 5. The victim further said that some inhabitants of the ashram departed because they could no longer take the cruel treatment they were receiving and that the children there were forced to work at the goshala. When she was going to Vijayawada after making her escape, she told a fellow female traveler about it, and the latter assisted her in filing a complaint.

According to the police, the case has been moved to Visakhapatnam, and Poornananda has been charged with rape in accordance with IPC Section 376 and POCSO Act Section 6 as well. The girl is currently being examined by a doctor at the government hospital in Vijayawada. 12 orphans, including four girls, were reportedly housed in the ashram, according to sources. However, the ashram members refuted the allegations of sexual assault and said there was a plot to steal the ashram’s rich lands. Poornananda was arrested in 2012 on comparable accusations. At the time, he was charged with raping a 13-year-old. Poornananda is still being tried in that case, according to Ch. Vivekananda, assistant commissioner of police at the Disha police station in Visakhapatnam.
