A court in Lakshadweep’s Kavaratti has sentenced Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Mohammad Faizal to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in a 2009 attempt-to-murder case. Faizla has been representing the union territory in Parliament since 2014. The court canceled the bail of three accused including Faizal.

There were a total of 23 accused in the case, of which 4 were convicted. Faizal was found guilty of assaulting his relative Mohammad Salih. Each of the culprits has also been fined one lakh rupees. Faisal said it was a “politically motivated” case and he would soon file an appeal in the high court.

The complaint states that a group of people led by Faisal attacked Salih and seriously injured him after an argument over the construction of a shed. Salih was flown to Kerala, where he was hospitalized for several months.

Mohammad Salih is son-in-law of late former Lok Sabha member from Lakshadweep and veteran Congress leader PM Sayeed. Saeed represented the island 10 times before his death in 2005. According to lawyers, the MP and others attacked Padnath Salih, son-in-law of former Union Minister PM Sayeed, when they reached their neighborhood to intervene on a political issue during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

Faizal is currently a member of the Lok Sabha and has served a sentence of over 2 years. If he does not challenge the decision and get relief from the Kerala High Court, his political future may be in jeopardy.
