Russia’s top military officer has been put in charge of troops fighting in the ongoing war with Ukraine. The removal of the former officer and transfer of command to a new officer is seen as a sign of dissatisfaction with the current leadership and failure to achieve the expected results of the armed forces. Russian Armed Forces Chief General Valery Gerasimov has been appointed to lead the Unified Group of Forces in Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry said. Appointing a new commander has been completed.
Former commander General Sergei Surovykin and two other generals have been appointed under General Gerasimov. The redeployment to the top post was ordered by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu but also involved the approval of President Vladimir Putin. It indicates that the president has confidence in his top military chiefs despite widespread criticism of the troops’ ability to fight.
