Renowned Filipino journalist Mike Enriquez passed away at the age of 71 following an extended illness, as confirmed by GMA Network. Enriquez was an instrumental figure in Philippine news and entertainment for 54 years. He was set to celebrate his 72nd birthday in October. His co-anchoring role in “24 Oras,” the network’s news program since 2004, was the platform through which news of his passing was delivered. Former co-host Mel Tiangco, visibly emotional, shared a statement from the company expressing their deep mourning. In her statement, she said, “The Board of Directors, management, and employees of GMA Network, Inc. deeply mourn the passing of Mr. Enriquez.” Notably, Enriquez had taken a break in December 2021 to undergo a kidney transplant. Astonishingly, he returned to his duties just three months later, in time for the 2022 presidential elections.

Enriquez’s surviving spouse, Lizabeth “Baby” Yumping, remains alive. The couple did not have any children. Throughout his extensive broadcasting career, Mike Enriquez assumed various roles and left an indelible impact on the Philippine media landscape. His journey commenced in 1969 when he started as a staff announcer at the Manila Broadcasting Company. Little did he know, this serendipitous opportunity would set the stage for a remarkable career spanning several decades.
