Reportedly, on Wednesday, the Kenyan police fired tear gas at protesters who took to the streets in defiance of a government warning. The incident happened on Wednesday when the police in Kenyan fired tear gas at protestors during clashes that left at least 12 people wounded as the opposition organized demonstrations calling for the government of President William Ruto to lower the cost of living. However, the opposition called for three days of countryside protests which motive to forcing the president to repeal a finance law imposing new taxes. Moreover, Ruto had pledged that no protest would take place saying that he would take opposition leader Raila Odinga.

In a statement, the opposition condemned the arrests of seven elected leaders and two close associates of Odinga by calling it a desperate attempt by the Ruto administration to dislocate the opposition. Reportedly, the business and schools in Nairobi were closed as police used tear gas and water to migrate the protestors. Reportedly, many demonstrations were reported in several other parts of the country which included Western countries such as Kisumu, Migori, and Kisi where the opposition enjoys huge support. Furthermore, the police said that the protestors were illegal as no permission had been issued but the right to peaceful protests is taken in the Kenyan constitution.

A week before, it was reported that at least 10 people were killed and many were injured of which 53 were children who went into shock after a tear gas explosion occurred inside their school premises. Many religious leaders have called for dialogue between the government and the opposition to end the protests. On Wednesday, the Catholic bishops issued a statement that wrote that no further blood shall be shed. Moreover, urged the president to appeal the newly passed Finance Act that has agitated many people from Kenya. The law has raised the price of fuel to its highest level as the government implements a doubling of value-added tax on petroleum products to 16 percent. The prices have taken effect despite a court order suspending the implementation of the controversial new taxes.
