Spanish PM calls heat wave climate emergency
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, citing data released Monday by the Carlos III Health Institute, said more than 500 people had died as a result of the heat wave. However, the institute stresses that these figures are a statistical estimate and not official death records. At the same time, Prime Minister Sanchez said that people have died because of such high temperatures this summer. He said he asked citizens to exercise utmost caution. At the same time, he emphasized that the climate emergency is a reality.
Temperatures in Spain exceed 45 degrees due to heat wave
Spain, one of the coldest countries in Europe, has been hit by heatwaves that have affected much of Europe in the past. During this time, the maximum temperature in many European countries, including Spain, was raised to 45 °C (113 °F). This led to dozens of forest fires. As a result, the fire forced thousands of people from their homes and claimed at least two lives. A firefighter and a shepherd have been burned in a fire in northwestern Spain.
Deadliest heat wave since 1975
Meteorological agency AEMET reported on Wednesday that a heatwave was recorded in Spain between July 9 and 18. It was one of the hottest summers ever. AEMET spokeswoman Beatriz Harvela said it was the third most intense heatwave in terms of geographic extent and duration since records began in 1975. Two other heat waves last longer, he said. One of which was in July 2015 which lasted for 26 days and the other in August 2003 which lasted for 16 days.
