Google Celebrates Clorindo Testa On His Birthday
Google honours Clorindo Testa today, an Argentinean-Italian architect and artist who is widely recognized as a pioneer of contemporary architecture in Latin America. Testa was born on this day in 1923 in Naples, Italy. During his early years, his family moved to Argentina, where he subsequently developed an interest in painting. Following his 1948 architecture degree from the Universidad de Buenos Aires, Testa began a spectacular career that had a lasting impact on the world of architecture. The construction of a government complex in La Pampa, notable for being his first major project in 1955, marked his entry into the field of brutalist architecture, emphasizing austere designs and exhibiting raw building materials.
Testa achieved worldwide recognition in 1959 when he designed the magnificent Brutalist Bank of London and South America, also known as the Banco de Londres y América del Sud. He was then commissioned to create the Biblioteca Nacional de la República Argentina (National Library of the Argentine Republic) in 1962, which cemented his position as a preeminent architect both domestically and globally. Testa’s architectural designs exhibit a smooth fusion of his artistic sensibility and unique use of colour, tension, analogies, and plasticity. Biblioteca Nacional de la República Argentina and the Banco de Londres skyscraper in Buenos Aires are two notable examples.
One of Testa’s most famous creations, the Mariano Moreno National Library of Argentina, was designated a national historic monument in 2019. Testa completed over 60 projects over his career and was honoured three times in 1982, 1992, and 2012 with the coveted Konex Award. An admired person, Clorindo Testa was instrumental in breaking the conventions of 20th-century buildings in Argentina and creating a new architectural language and style. His contributions to modern architecture both locally and internationally are reflected in his legacy, which still exists today. Testa’s most famous creation, the Mariano Moreno National Library of Argentina, was recognised as a national historic monument in 2019, adding to his already high reputation.
