Rahul Gandhi paid obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar on Tuesday. This time Rahul Gandhi appeared wearing a saffron turban, he sat behind the kirtan group and listened to Guru Bani for some time. This is the first time a person from the Gandhi family has sat inside the Golden Temple to listen to Kirtan since Operation Blue Star. Here Rahul Gandhi sat behind the kirtan team for about 20 minutes. Earlier, Congress’s Bharat Jhor Yatra entered Punjab from Haryana through Shambhu border. The journey started from Ambala in Haryana on Tuesday. The special thing is that no one knew about Rahul Gandhi’s arrival in Amritsar till Tuesday morning. Rahul Gandhi reached Chandigarh by car. Then went to Amritsar by special flight.

As pictures of Rahul Gandhi visiting the Golden Temple were posted on Twitter, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya took aim at Rahul Gandhi by sharing a video of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. In this video, Rajiv Gandhi refers to the riots that followed the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi said, ‘When a big tree falls, the earth shakes a little’. Amit Malviya wrote, ‘Did your father atone for Rajiv Gandhi’s comments justifying the massacre of Sikhs? Congress hit the streets, chanted ‘Khun Ka Badla Khun Se Lenge’, raped women, tied burning tires around men’s necks…’ The tweet also mentioned Kamal Nath and Tytler.

Nehru family and Punjab politics

Like the rest of the country, Punjab was ruled by the Congress. Although there was a lot of dissatisfaction with the Congress among the Punjabis after the partition, the Congress was very strong in Punjab because of the Congress wind. After the rise of the Akalis, the Congress in Punjab gradually came to be identified as a party of Hindus. This was the case even when the BJP was with the Akali Dal.

Even before the action against the Golden Temple in 1984, the Akalis had formed governments twice in Punjab. Punjab is perhaps the only country in the country’s politics where an opposition government was being formed during that period. After 1984 the Shiromani Akali Dal became very powerful there. Although the Congress government was formed under the leadership of Bayant Singh in the 1992 elections, there was a lot of public anger for the Congress. Bayant’s leadership had many reasons for winning the election. Its biggest reason was that almost all important parties boycotted the elections.

However, after Bayant Singh, the Congress formed governments twice under the leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh, who was once a staunch opponent of Operation Blue Star. Despite all this, the Congress reached the Golden Temple for the Gandhi family, even after the end of terrorism in Punjab, the security agencies did not allow any member of the Gandhi family to enter Punjab for many days. Perhaps this is why Rahul Gandhi suddenly arrived in Amritsar by plane without any programme.

The BJP has made anti-Sikh riots an issue in the past as well.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi once attacked the Modi government over lynching in Punjab. However, BJP leader Amit Malviya responded by tweeting something like this. Malviya said that Rajiv Gandhi was the father of mob lynching, which justified the blood-soaked massacre of Sikhs. Several Congress leaders took to the streets and raised slogans such as blood revenge with blood, women were raped, Sikh men were wrapped around burning tires and dogs were led to corpses dumped in drains.
