A week after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn in, it became the subject of controversy. Let us try to understand why there is a controversy.
Holy place of all three religions
Jerusalem is a holy place for followers of three religions: Islam, Judaism and Christianity. According to a BBC report, Al-Aqsa Mosque is considered the third holiest site in Islam after Mecca and Medina. At the same time, it is a very holy place for Jews. It is known as ‘Temple Mount’ to Jews and ‘Al-Haram Al-Sharif’ to Muslims.
Al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock are included in this complex. The Dome of the Rock is considered the holiest site by Jews. On the other hand, due to its association with Prophet Mohammad, it is considered a holy place by Muslims.
The round-domed Masjid al-Aqsa, also known as the Muslim Al-Haram-al-Sharif, is situated on a 35-acre complex. And Jews call it Temple Town.
Why is it so important religiously?
Regarding the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, built in the seventh century, it is believed that the Prophet Muhammad went to heaven from here. On the other hand, Jews believe that the Jewish temples mentioned in the Bible were located here. According to Jewish beliefs, it is a holy place that people should not even enter.
The western wall of the complex is called the Wailing Wall, which is believed to be a part of the Jewish Temple. At the same time, Muslims call it the Wall of Al Buraq. It is believed that Prophet Muhammad chained an animal called al-Buraq here and through it he went to heaven and met Allah.

Why is there a debate about Al-Aqsa?
The conflict has been ongoing since Israel’s 1967 occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, including the Old City. In fact, in 1947, the United Nations i.e. the United Nations planned a partition for a separate Palestinian territory. At that time Palestine was occupied by the British. Two countries were to be created. One for the Palestinians and the other for the Jews of Europe. 55 percent of the land is given to Jews and 45 percent to Palestinians.
Jerusalem, The area in which the Al-Aqsa Complex is located has been declared an international community under the administration of the United Nations. Then began the occupation strategy.
In 1948, Israel declared itself an independent state, occupying 72 percent of the land, including the West Bank and Gaza Strip. In 1967, Israel captured the city of East Jerusalem and with it the Al-Aqsa compound.
Israel took it from Jordan, but created a system to control the holy sites and maintain stability. Jordan was made caretaker, while security was given to Israel. But here only Muslims were allowed to pray or offer prayers.
This complex is in the very old part of Jerusalem and it has the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Non-Muslims are forbidden to pray here. Jews can enter the mosque premises, but cannot offer their prayers there.
It was not confirmed whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s minister, Itmar Ben Givir, prayed there. Despite this, Palestinians are protesting against attempts to change the current status of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
