Who Is Dr Olayemi Cardoso?
Recently, the Senate confirmed Olayemi Cardoso as the new governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank. On Wednesday, it was reported that the Nigerian Senate led by Godswill Akpabio has confirmed Dr. Olayemi Cardoso as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. It was revealed that besides him, four other nominees for appointed for the positions of CBN Depuy Governors were also confirmed as Emem Nnana Usoro, Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijio, Philip Ikeazor, and Dr. Bala M. Bello. Reportedly, Cardoso resumed as the acting governor of the CBN last week which is pending his screening and expected confirmation by the Senate. However, his confirmation was met with congratulations from former Bayelsa East Senator, Ben Murray-Bruce, who described it as a transformative period for Nigeria.
It was confirmed that in response to questions from Senate members during his confirmation process, Cardoso outlined his plans to address the lack of stability in foreign exchange markets. However, he expressed his intention to prioritize clearing CBN’s foreign exchange without settling it in the near term. Moreover, Shehu Sani, the former Kaduna Central senator shared his expectations from the new CBN governor via social media. Furthermore, Sani urged Cardoso to rescue the naira and restart the country’s monetary policy while avoiding political rice farmers. However, the new leadership team present at the apex bank is expected to steer its affairs for the coming five years.
