Hong Kong Typhoon Warning Signal Today: Tropical Storm Talim To Be Closest

A tropical storm is a rapidly rotating system, characterized by a low-pressure center, a closed low-level atmospheric circulation, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain and squalls. Depending on its location and strength. Tropical storms typically form over large bodies of relatively warm water. They derive their energy through the evaporation of water from the ocean surface, which ultimately condenses into clouds and rain when moist air rises and cools to saturation. Tropical storms are typically between 100 and 2,000 km (62 and 1,243 mi) in diameter.

As of Sunday noon, the tropical storm is located 390km (242 miles) south-southeast of Hong Kong, as it moves towards Guangdong and Hainan Island. Forecasters say that “Seas are rough with swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports”.

In the early hours of Monday, Tropical Storm Talim will be closest to Hong Kong. It weighs an upgrade to a No. 8 typhoon warning for Sunday night, said by the city’s forecaster. As the intensifying tropical storm moved west-northwest towards western Guangdong and Hainan Island at 15km/hour (9.3mph), it was located 390km (242 miles) South-southeast of the city. On Sunday morning, the observatory raised a No 3 typhoon warning signal and said it would remain in force throughout the day.

Talim, which means ‘sharp’ in Tagalog, will pass within 300km south of Hong Kong at around midnight. From northeast to southeast, the storm’s wind direction is likely to change. The Observatory also warned that under the combined effect of the storm surge brought by the spring tide and Talim, there could be flooding in coastal low-lying areas on Monday. Only hours after the No 3 signal was raised, Hongkongers were already feeling the effects of the approaching tropical storm. Two of Monday’s flights between the city and Haikou had been canceled, said Hong Kong Airlines.

After cutting short a weekend getaway on Lamma Island, retired insurance agent Ceci Chan, 57, and her husband arrived at the Central Ferry Piers. She said, “We decided to go back to the city a bit earlier because of the typhoon warning. The weather in Lamma was very fine and hot. The clothes I washed last night were already dry this morning”. The Hong Kong tourism board canceled two sessions of the Music Shows in the Harbour performances along Wan Chai’s waterfront and its Symphony of Lights Pyrotechnic show on Sunday, citing safety concerns.
